How to Magically Engage & Connect with Any Audience – Insights from Ben Hanlin

At The Speakers Agency, we work with an incredibly diverse range of people. Our clients include universities, international law firms, and government bodies. Our speakers range from menopause experts to business growth specialists. No two interactions are ever the same, which means that understanding how to connect with any audience is essential.

Last week, we had the privilege of attending a session with Ben Hanlin – magician, entertainer, and communication expert – where he shared game-changing insights on how to truly engage people. His session, How to Magically ENGAGE & CONNECT With Any Audience, was packed with practical advice for anyone who needs to pitch, present, or lead with impact.

While we can’t reveal all of Ben’s secrets (after all, the magic is in booking him for your own event!), here are three key takeaways:

1. Human Stories Matter More Than Numbers

When we watch a film about a disaster – be it a tsunami or an earthquake – the focus is rarely on the event itself. Instead, the story centres on a person or a family, someone we can relate to. Why? Because human stories create emotional connections.

The same principle applies in business. If you’re pitching to a client, rattling off statistics won’t make a lasting impression. Instead, tell a story: “This person, just like you, faced this challenge. Here’s how we helped them.” This approach fosters empathy and makes your message far more compelling.

2. Start with an Unexpected Question

Most conversations begin the same way: “How are you?” or “How’s the weather?” But real engagement comes from disrupting the usual patterns of thinking. Ben recommends starting a conversation or presentation with an intriguing thought or question that makes people pause.

For example, instead of the standard opening, imagine beginning a meeting with:
“What’s the most surprising thing that’s happened to you today?”
“If you could instantly master any skill, what would it be?”

Of course, not every conversation or presentation allows for a completely unexpected opening question. Context matters, and in formal settings, certain approaches may not be appropriate. However, the key takeaway here is to disrupt people’s thought patterns – to say something different from what they expect.

For example, at a conference, instead of defaulting to:
“That session was great, wasn’t it?”

Try this instead:
“What was the most interesting thing you took away from that session?”

This small shift transforms a passive comment into a thought-provoking discussion. It makes the other person think, engages them on a deeper level, and sets you apart from the usual small talk.

3. Be 100% Present

In today’s digital world, multitasking is the norm—but it’s also a killer of real connection. How often do we check emails during a Zoom call? Or glance at our phones mid-conversation?

Ben’s advice is simple: be fully present. When you give someone your undivided attention, you create an environment where they feel heard, valued, and engaged. It’s one of the simplest yet most effective ways to build stronger relationships – whether you’re leading a team, selling an idea, or networking with new contacts.
