About Frazer Hines

Frazer Hines is one of Britain’s most recognisable television actors, celebrated for his iconic roles as Jamie McCrimmon in the BBC’s Doctor Who and Joe Sugden in Emmerdale Farm, a character he played for over two decades. With a career spanning film, television, theatre, and audio drama, Frazer has captivated audiences for more than six decades.

Born in Yorkshire, Frazer trained at the Corona Academy and made his acting debut at just eight years old. By the end of the 1950s, he had already appeared in twelve films, including Charlie Chaplin’s A King in New York and the first Hammer horror film, X The Unknown. His early television credits include The Silver Sword, Emergency Ward 10, and Coronation Street, before landing the role of Jamie McCrimmon, a beloved companion of the Second Doctor in Doctor Who (1966–1969). He later reprised the role in The Five Doctors (1983) and The Two Doctors (1985).

Following his success on Doctor Who, Frazer starred as Joe Sugden in Emmerdale Farm from 1972 to 1994, becoming a household name. Alongside his television work, he has enjoyed a prolific theatre career, with credits including 28 consecutive pantomimes, and has appeared in numerous films such as The Last Valley (1970) and Zeppelin (1971). More recently, Frazer has appeared in Outlander (2019), BBC’s Doctors (2020), and the romantic-comedy Lost at Christmas.

Frazer is also known for his work on Doctor Who audio dramas and as the voice behind BBC Audio’s narrated Doctor Who releases. Off-screen, he is a passionate horse racing enthusiast, co-owner of a record company, and a sought-after after-dinner speaker. With a wealth of behind-the-scenes stories from a remarkable career, Frazer Hines continues to entertain audiences with warmth, wit, and charm.
