About Rachel Riley

Rachel Riley MBE is a mathematician, broadcaster and television presenter best known for her role as the resident numbers expert on Channel 4’s long-running quiz show Countdown and its hugely popular comedy spin-off, 8 Out of 10 Cats Does Countdown.

After studying Mathematics at Oxford University and spending a short time working as a data analyst, Rachel joined Countdown at just 22 years old, beating more than 1,000 applicants to succeed Carol Vorderman. Since then, she has become one of the most recognisable faces on British television, combining a love of numbers with a warm, engaging and relatable presenting style.

Alongside Countdown, Rachel has co-hosted programmes including The Gadget Show, It’s Not Rocket Science and Sky Sports’ Friday Night Football. A passionate football fan, she has also appeared on Football Focus, Fantasy Football Club and numerous sports broadcasts.

A strong advocate for improving numeracy and encouraging greater participation in STEM subjects, particularly among girls and young women, Rachel regularly supports educational initiatives and campaigns. Her first book, At Sixes and Sevens, was inspired by the challenges many parents faced during home schooling and offers a practical and entertaining guide to improving maths confidence.

Rachel is also involved with the Premier League’s Primary Stars programme and serves as a Global Ambassador for Grassroot Soccer, using the power of sport to inspire young people and support education worldwide. In 2023, she was awarded an MBE for services to Holocaust education and antisemitism awareness.
