Read more about Sylvia Tidy-Harris
Founder and MD of the Speakers Agency, Sylvia Tidy-Harris started out as an air stewardess for Monarch Airlines at age 18. She was also the former personal and business manager to the cartoonist Bill Tidy, a programme researcher for Granada, Central and BBC TV & Radio. And she spent many years as an international tour manager leading tours to over 50 countries around the globe
Sylvia started up her businesses in 2001 with a mere £1000 and quickly taught herself to act on instinct, identify the fine line of when to take a risk and when not to, and to fly for the most part by the seat of her pants. With no formal business training it was her only way forward. She didn't realise that the first hurdle she would come up against was the fact that her business, not a run of the mill everyday start up, would flummox most of the advisors and bank personnel she met. An entrepreneur at heart Sylvia’s story is not of a multi million pound dream but a hugely successful and ever expanding “this really could happen to you” story. From the ubiquitous back bedroom, the two agencies are employing five people in two offices.
She maintained her international tour managing job with Titan Tours until May 2003 taking The Speakers Agency's first booking on the Yangtze, the second whilst touring Graceland in Memphis and the third on a swamp tour outside New Orleans.
The Speakers Agency and subsequently womenspeakers.co.uk which was incorporated into The Speakers Agency in August 2017 and her exclusive talent agent Tidy Management (formerly STH Management) have far exceeded her expectations in growth and turnover and for many years she and the businesses have attracted so much interest that she is now often asked to contribute on a variety of business and lifestyle issues. She has been featured in all the broadsheets, appeared on BBC Breakfast, most of the 5Live programmes, BBC New 24, C4 News at 7pm, ITN news, Woman’s Hour etc, etc. She wrote the bi weekly column Viewpoint in the Daily Telegraph 2005 – 2007 and has written for the Sunday Express Business Supplement and Leicester Mercury on a number of occasions.
Sylvia Tidy-Harris is not scared of voicing her thoughts on business red tape and the detrimental effect these often ridiculous rules have on businesses large and small.
Sylvia is half Italian, has lived in Madeira and Spain, her brother Nick died of Sudden Death Syndrome in 2004, has visited 26 US States and 50 odd countries around the world, is an Ambassador for Child Bereavement UK and a Lady Taverner. She loved writing for the Daily Telegraph, caught Cholera in Oman in 2016, married at the age of 37, has two step daughters Mandy and Kirsty, and an 11 year old granddaughter called Olivia Pearl. Her favourite places on earth are Zuma Beach CA, Calvi in Corsica and Capri at night when the last ferry has departed.
How the hell did we ever make it?
A rising entrepreneur Sylvia story is not of a multi million pound dream but a hugely successful and ever expanding “this really could happen to you” story. From the ubiquitous back bedroom, the two agencies are employing five people in two offices. Her story is an inspiration to anyone who is about to embark on a similar journey or indeed already has and her understanding of what most people go through in their quest to start up, whether they be one man band or a large manufacturing unit. She can identify with the hurdles they face as they grow their businesses and her success story which also includes the problems and disappointments she has encountered along the way as well as the mistakes she has made is both amusing and thought provoking.
