Julia Samuel

Julia Samuel is a psychotherapist specialising in grief, who has spent the last twenty-five years working with bereaved families. She was awarded an MBE in the 2015 New Year’s Honours list for services to bereaved children. Julia is a talented and highly respected speaker.


About Julia Samuel

Julia Samuel has worked both in private practice and in the NHS at St Mary’s Hospital Paddington for 23 years. She pioneered the role of maternity and pediatric psychotherapist.

In 1994 she worked to help launch and establish Child Bereavement UK (founded as the Child Bereavement Trust), and as Founder Patron, continues to play a very active role in the charity.


Julia Samuel is an Accredited Member and a Vice President of British Associate of Counselling and a UKCP registered psychotherapist.

She worked as Counsellor for Pediatrics at St Mary’s Paddington for 23 years, where her role was to support families whose children or babies had died, and she is now involved in training and supporting the staff. She also has a private practice where she sees families and individuals on a wide variety of issues.

Julia helped establish and launch Child Bereavement UK (founded as The Child Bereavement Trust), and as Founder Patron continues to be very active in many aspects of the Charity’s work.

A Primary Tutor at Metanoia Institute for nine years, training adults on a BA course in counselling Julia also completed her own Msc. there. She was also Honorary Fellow at Imperial College for a number of years, and has advised on many committees and organisations on the subject of baby and child death.

Julia wrote the ‘Candid Counsel’ column for Tatler magazine for a number of years and has written for Harper’s Bazaar, Porter magazine and You magazine as well as contributing to a number of research papers on bereavement. Julia’s first book ‘Grief Works’ is published by Penguin Life March 2017.

In addition, Julia has worked on different advisory committees on bereavement, been an Honorary Fellow at Imperial College and taught counselling at Metanoia Institute for 9 years.

As an author, Julia’s first book: Grief Works: Stories of Life, Death and Surviving, was published in 2017.
