Just a note to tell you how brilliant Steve Pateman was at our meeting today. He was possibly one of the most enjoyable speakers we have ever had. He had the audience of women in stitches of laughter for over an hour, and his talk was funny, engaging, and filled with humanity. His personality was relaxed and friendly, and he was happy to pose for pictures and to chat well beyond the contracted time. We would have him back in a heartbeat, and would heartily recommend him to anyone looking for a charming, entertaining and accomplished speaker.

Steve Pateman started in the family shoe business W J Brookes straight from school at the age of 17 where he learnt the trade from his farther, eventually taking over the running of the factory when his farther retired. When a down turn in the shoe industry led Steve to look to new ideas he stumbled into the market of making kinky boots for the transvestites and transgender community. A series of events then led him into a world of new experiences, people and celebrity as well as becoming a television star of the trouble of the top BBC2 programme.
The programme where shaving his legs and learning to walk in six-inch stiletto heels are just two of the things Steve Pateman is doing to save his family business. For four generations the Patemans have been making traditional men's footwear, but a strong pound and cheap imports have taken away his customers. Now, desperate to survive, he's convinced his father that he's found the answer. Making thigh length boots and high heel shoes strong enough for 15 stone men.
The film follows Steve and his family as he puts together his first fetish shoe collection. To survive, he must beat off the competition and get enough orders by Christmas or the 100 year-old Northampton
A BBC documentary about a struggling Northamptonshire shoe factory caught the attention of film-makers and in 2005 became the film Kinky Boots. Now in New York the stage version has won the Tony award for Best Musical. What has made the story travel with such success from Earls Barton to Broadway?
Steve Pateman clearly recalls the moment he realised the TV documentary in which he had featured was a hit with viewers.
"On the day it went out the BBC brought me down to London to do a couple of interviews. The next day I was on the tube rushing for my train back to Northamptonshire when a guy recognised me and leant over to talk about the programme. Soon half the carriage was on about it. That's when I knew it had gripped people."
Trouble at the Top: The Kinky Boot Factory was broadcast in February 1999. If people tuned in for the sexy title they kept watching because of an engrossing human story.
In his 30s Pateman had taken over from his father as boss of WJ Brookes - a traditional shoe factory in the village of Earls Barton in Northamptonshire which had existed for more than a century.
Struggling with changes in fashion and competition from abroad Steve had started to look for new markets. He was persuaded by an unexpected phone-call to think about expansion into "kinky boots" - women's shoes in men's sizes for transgender people.
