After graduating with a BSc in Animal Behaviour at 20, she took a life changing decision to head from Wirral, up to Cumbria to pursue her dreams. To embark on a career working with animals.
Full of passion, enthusiasm and commitment Hannah threw herself into every challenge possible. As a result, she carved a place in a male dominated industry, One she had no prior connection with. Furthermore it wasn’t an easy task for this young Scouse with dyed red hair.
Luckily Hannah’s passion for the countryside runs deep. Brought up in a family who really valued the British countryside, its natural beauty and its abundance of native wildlife. As she says, “as a family we were always outside. We went on camping trips, visited tourists’ farm visits and were always in the local park”
Her parents quickly recognised her connection between animals and wildlife. As a result they have constantly encouraged her to pursue her dreams and grab them with both hands.
Even as a child she called herself ‘Dr Dolittle’ and from the age of four told everyone she would ‘work with animals forever’. Certainly, that dream has come true as that's exactly what she’s doing.
Instantly recognisable as the Red Shepherdess, thanks to her popular YouTube videos documenting her life, she is now a first-generation farmer. She runs her recently acquired 26-acre family smallholding in the beautiful Eden Valley. The small holding has 85 commercial ewes, two Highland cattle, 1 Tamworth sow and two pygmy goats. She is also a self-employed contract shepherdess working with her two border collies throughout Cumbria.
"Firstly my mind is blown daily by the beauty of the landscape I work in. Secondly, I have been accepted in the strong local community. And thirdly, there are the animals and characters I am continually working with."
Hannah absolutely loves her life and says she is truly living the dream she always wanted. But she had to work very hard to get and it hasn’t come easy. It has been challenging and demanding along the way but she believes those hurdles make it even more satisfying and rewarding. Because three years on she can see how far she’s come.
Documenting her journey and life through photography Hannah offers an insight into the world she loves and feels so humbled to be a part of. She is grateful for every morning she is able to step outside into fresh air no matter what the weather is throwing at her.
