About Hilary Kay

Hilary Kay’s obsession with antiques began when she was a child.  She joined Sotheby’s at the age of 20 and the following year, when 21, she became Sotheby’s youngest ever auctioneer.

Biography

By the time Hilary left Sotheby’s, after 23 years, she held the position of Senior Director running several expert departments as diverse as motor cars and musical instruments.  Hilary is one of the most familiar faces on BBC TV’s long-running ‘Antiques Roadshow’ having joined the programme in 1978. She presented a landmark series for BBC TV, ‘Brilliantly British’, exploring the lives of Thomas Chippendale, Josiah Wedgwood and William Morris. Hilary has featured in numerous television and radio programmes and in 2010 (much to her surprise) she won BBC TV’s ‘Celebrity Mastermind’.

Hilary is an independent consultant, broadcaster, lecturer and writer on the subjects of antiques and collectables. Her company Art and Antiques Events provides arts and antiques-centred entertainments to the corporate market, to the world’s cruise lines and to private clients.  She recently devised and produced a theatre show, ‘Have You Had It Long, Madam’, which toured the UK, Australia, New Zealand and Canada.  Hilary is currently involved with online further education, having created The Art Institute a course that has brought together leading experts to present the history of art to an international audience.
